professional practice 2

a little update as to what ive been looking into for the PP

i've generated a list of art publishing websites, the more I have with the same username and description the more online presence my art has, theoretically I may even get my own google biography if they are all optimized and have the same data.
to this end here is my list, i'll update it whenever I find a new one
good places to build a fanbase

the big ones

lesser known -
obscure -
there is also a list of promotional blogs that you can submit artworks to:
http://nonsensesociety.com/2012/07/self-promotion-blogs/

*it is my personal opinion that with the rising popularity of VR soon we will have virtual gallery sites to visit so be sure to keep an eye out and jump on any new sites that pop up.
like this one from second life but good

my favorite advice from my research
If you light a candle in front of a mirror and repeat "Ruan Jia" three times, the god of renders will appear and give you supreme chinese rendering powers in exchange for your soul.

major project 5

sketch dump so far.

rough initial sequence storyboard

rough page layouts

dragon wings animated frames
the based these on the wings of a bat and how they fly (thank you david attenborough for having all this wonderful footage of animals to study) this part of the animation will be drawn using adobe flash while the second page animation will be using the puppet rig in after effects, no idea how im going to use the two simultaneously but im sure i will figure out a way.
im trying to make all the flash animations looped, incase i need to import them as .gifs or if anything goes wrong with the timing they should be able to keep going through the sequence

these sequences will aslo make up my gif tests

same principle but with a unicorn this time, the three things i'll be needing is a medieval designs, flash animated sequence and a layout for the character sequence.

im going to be continuing this format for all 7 of my mythical beasts, why 7 you ask? numerous reasons, if each gets page gets a maximum of 20 seconds that equals 140 seconds for the book, plus the 20 seconds for the opening sequence, 10 for the title and 10 for the credits, we get a grand total of 3 minutes. which is what I am told is the maximum sort of time you want for a gallery animation (any longer and people get bored) not to mention that's 4320 frames at 24fps and my time is already racing away like so many animated horses.

major project 4

since I finally got an idea of what to do it's been all go go go in terms of research, I had forgotten just how fascinating medieval illustration was.
what i've been up to: I took a road trip to nearby Hampshire to go to the lovely Winchester Cathedral.
while im not normally one for churches and religious stuff in general, the subject matter means I need to have a look at old texts and there is nothing quite like the old architecture and art to get the artistic juices flowing.
obviously I brought a trusty pocket sketchbook for my trip and promptly have misplaced it due to its small size, so until I find it you will have to make due with some blurry pictures (it was super cold in there and it's hard to take a photo with gloves on).

the thing I mainly went to see was the old texts they had stored in the top floor, namely the winchester bible, whist photos weren't permitted in this part of the cathedral I have managed to snag myself a most excellent resource from the gift shop a whole book on the winchester bible, by Claire Donovan, with lots of nice pictures of the ornate lettering for reference.

major project 3

having a look at what other illustrators have done in terms of bestiaries and I found some very nice works.

*infographics by Venere
this collection raised the question of which geographical style Im going to work in, and after looking through various historical text, i've settled on european mythology and styles.
for one this means I get to use ink as a medium which I haven't got to use for ages and I need to break in my new g-pen.

not directly related but this infographic on cryptozoology has also raised some interesting lines of research for this project. its good to know that works on this subject are still of interest to people, this infographic was used by the daily mail.

*infographic by Mark Adams

looking more at the historical context of bestiaries, unfortunately most seem to have been made but monks and artists whose names have been lost to history, it's such a shame that so many will never be credited for these beautiful and ornate illustrations.

going again to the contemporary side of things, here we can see Ana Maria Pacheco version of a bestiary, she uses screen prints to illustrate poems by George Szirtes. the format the issue itself is also a very handy reference and the animation of the pages will be very much how the bulk of my animated sequence will look.
read here :http://www.prattcontemporaryart.co.uk/a-modern-bestiary-book/

the bestiary work by edward gorey (the forerunner to tim burton) uses his own distinctive style in pen and ink to give an etched look to his work. like the original bestiary authors, some of his illustrations are more like doodles surrounding the text.

major project 2

so after much soul searching and deliberation about what I wanted to do for my final major project I finally have a good idea.
let me tell you this wasn't easy, I went back through my collection of old sketchbooks rattling my brain thinking of something I could both enjoy and has enough subject matter to make a good project.
I noticed i really have a thing for drawing dragons, no idea why but it seems that in every sketchbook ive done there is a drawing of some sort of dragon in there somewhere.

seriously, every sketchbook dating back to 2010 has a bloody dragon doodle

that got me thinking about the project we did ages ago about mythology (even though I completely failed at it due to being constantly i'll). well the stars have aligned and i'm in better health than I have been for years so it looks like i'm doing something about mythology.
after doing some initial research (googling) I found myself drawn to the concept of bestiaries and with that in mind I came up with this brief:

Synopsis of study

Great art picks up where nature ends. Marc Chagall

For my Final major project I will be creating an animated sequence revolving around the theme of ‘bestiary’s’. Whist researching art history I came across this type of book from the Middle Ages and became fascinated by its imagery. This style of illustration and the subject matter, as well as how they were made, has been my most recent fascination and so I have decided to bring one to life using animation.

This project will also serve as a means of showing a visual CV as I intend to use multiple animation techniques and software to culminate in a final animation lasting 1-2 minutes.

Even as a combination of various digital software’s and animation techniques I hope to keep the classical style that was so abundant in manuscripts and works of the time, and so to that end, will be using line and watercolour / ink to create an authentic feeling to the book in the animation.
The software I plan to use for this animation is mainly, Photoshop, flash, after effects, and toonboom, but all the initial work will be done using traditional mediums.

Whist modern bestiaries are nothing new in the world of illustration, having been done by such artists as Jorge Luis Borges, I have yet to see an animated one. With the upcoming release of J.K.Rollings ‘fantastic beasts and where to find them’ and the continued popularity of G.R.R. Martine’s ‘Game of Thrones’ It is my belief that the interest in mythical beasts will soon spike and thus be marketable.

Looking at related works and narratives used in animations will help to both expand my creative horizons and provide various points of reference. There is no shortage of medieval illustrations of this subject matter with even the famed Leonardo da Vinci making one, but for the stylistic influence I will be looking more along the lines of William Simpson, Elia Mervi, and works of the Charging Image studio.

Professional practice 1

as the Professional practice is a project that i'll be doing slowly along side the major project, I have created a list of all the things I have to do in preparation for my life as a professional artist, I made this list with the help of some very good books
1. The Illustrator's guide to law and business - Simon Stern
2. Illustration 101 - Max Scratchmann
3. How to create a portfolio and get hired - Fig Taylor
By also looking at already established illustrators and seeing how they have marketed and promoted themselves to get idea on how to do it myself. this list is in no particular order in terms of how pressing or how important the task is, it's just how the order i came up with things in my brain storming session.

  • identify potential clients or positions for future work (get a list of contact details and start creating database)
  • join AOI
  • create a main website (buy domain name)
  • create secondary websites i.e blogs and community pages to help promote work
    • create list of potential site Deviantart, hitrecord, ect.
  • 8-10 work Portfolio to show potential clients (they are going to give us a nice one)
  • digital portfolio / showreel
  • business cards
  • business postcards / samples / newsletter
  • Artist CV
  • finalise logo
  • license for commission's (consider letterhead and type)
  • receipt for commissions
  • 500 word career plan
  • exhibition locations
  • list free and paid possible advertising space
  • research search engine optimisation for websites
  • commission email
  • research book publishing as it something I've always wanted to do and would be great advertising
  • look up potential agents pros/cons
whilst this looks like a lot of things to do, a lot of it will be using the same logo and stationery design so that will be my first task, things like joining the AOI will be the very last thing as it costs money and is on a timer, I wont be doing it until the last minute (during uni time as we get a discount)
I may or may not make the main website at this point as again it cost money and is on a timer so it will be another last minute one, just before I start contacting clients.

major project 1

ok lets get started
since I last posted there has been some ups and down in terms of my major project. essentially I spent the first few weeks, carrying on my pre major trying to find some way to expand it into a more fleshed out major project (this turned out to be very difficult) due to the nature of the subject matter I was just getting more and more depressed having to remember everything and it just wasn't working so I've ditched it and am coming up with a new project idea from scratch.
